Leicestershire V Tyne & Wear 25th/26th April 2009

Promoted!

Tyne & Wear County Darts team secured a stunning 21-15 win at Leicestershire to clinch promotion to the British Inter County Championship Division 3.

Tyne & Wear who started the weekend as outsiders managed to leap frog second placed Leicestershire to claim runners up spot in Division 4 behind Avon who were Tyne & Wear’s only defeat this season back in January.

The excellent Ladies A side capped a magnificent season to finish the season as Champions in their individual section ending the campaign undefeated. Sue Edwards came out on top of Divisions 4 final averages ending the season with 7 wins out of 7 with an overall average of 21.03

The weekend started with the Mens B side slumping to an 8-4 defeat with Thomas Chater winning his second Man of the Match in a row with a 3-1 victory and a winning average of 25.71, other winners for the second string included Craig Ryan (3-1, 21.63), Paul Hodge (3-1, 23.25) and Norman Purvis (3-2, 20.82).

The Ladies B team ended the season a very respective second in their section by notching a superb 4-2 victory to keep Tyne & Wear within touching distance of the hosts. Maureen Woodroffe took the Lady of the Match award with a superb average of 17.75 in her 3-1 victory, winning also for the Ladies B was Brenda Ryan (3-2, 14.99), Edie Casey (3-2, 15.16) and Judith Morrison (3-0, 13.30).

These Results meant that Leicestershire led 10-8 overall needing only victory on the final day to seal promotion; however Tyne & Wear backed by fantastic vociferous support were not going to give up without a fight and created an electric atmosphere only a room full of Geordies and Mackems could produce in unison!

The Ladies A took a comfortable 5-1 championship winning victory with recent Welsh International call up Ann Marie Potts taking the Lady of the Match award with a 3-1 victory and an average of 19.88, other winners were Meg Cullen (3-2, 17.45), Vera Younger (3-2, 17.59) Maureen Purvis (3-0, 19.03) and finally Sue Edwards who clinched the divisional averages in the Ladies A and also the point Tyne & Wear needed to secure promotion with a 3-1 win and a 18.72 average.

The Mens A team won with a season ending flourish taking their individual battle 8-4, Davy Stokell clinched the A sides Man of the Match trophy with a 26.43 average in his 3-2 win, other victors included A team debutant Neil Rose (3-1, 22.85), Dave Bullerwell (3-2, 23.22), Gary Dunn (3-2, 25.57), Chris Lisle (3-0, 25.05), Captain Andy Chalmers (3-1, 23.59), John Hepton (3-1, 24.45) and Thomas Chater who won 3-2 on his second winning result of the season.

After jubilant scenes of celebration!, after the champagne! and after the headaches have gone! Tyne & Wear are now left with thoughts of planning an assault on the British Inter County Championship Division 3 next season!
